The 7 Habits of Highly Effective People Summary

One of the most influential book that I have ever read is the 7 Habits of Highly Effective People by Stephen Covey. And here is the summary of this book:

7 Habits of Highly Effective People Summary

.

Habit #1: Be Proactive

Change yourself first. If you want to change something, you must first change yourself. Change starts from you, from within, and highly effective people make their decision to improve their lives through the things that they can influence, rather than by simply reacting to the external forces in their environment.

.

Habit #2: Begin With The End in Mind

Be a result oriented. This second habit is one of my favorite. I apply this in small tasks, and in looking for people to do the job.

In here, you have to develop a principle-centered personal mission statement. Then, extend the mission statement into long-term goals based on personal principles.

.

Habit #3: Put Things First

Determine what’s important. Knowing what’s really important is critical in making decisions. There are lots of distractions in life that appears as important, but in reality, it is not.

Your actions should reflect and your time should be spend on things that fits into your personal mission statement, observing the proper balance between production and building production capacity.

You must learn to identify your key roles that you take on in your life , and make time for each of them.

.

Habit #4: Think Win/Win

Deal or No Deal? Whenever you make decision, think on a “Win/Win” deal. Seek agreements and relationships that are mutually beneficial. In cases, where this “Win/Win” deal cannot be achieved, you must learn on how to accept the fact that agreeing to a “No Deal” may be the best alternative.

In developing an organizational culture, make sure that you reward a “Win/Win” behavior among employees and avoid unintentional rewarding win/lose behavior.

.

Habit #5: Seek First to Understand, Then To Be Understood

Learn to Listen. Stephen Covey presents this habit as the most important principle of interpersonal relations.

Seek to understand the other person first, and only then, try to be understood.

This habit of effective listening is not simply echoing what the other person has said, but rather, it is putting oneself in the perspective of the other person.

You should learn how to listen emphatically for both feelings and meaning of the words that has been said.

.

Habit #6: Synergize

Trustful communication. Through this trustful communication, you must find ways on how to leverage individual differences to create a whole that is greater than the sum of the parts.

Through mutual understanding and trust, one can solve conflicts and find a better solution than would have been obtained through either person’s own solution.

.

Habit #7: Sharpen the Saw

Maintain your balance. Maintaining your balance through physical, mental, social/emotional, and spiritual dimensions are critical in improving yourself to be a successful and effective person.

Take time out from production to build production capacity – through personal renewal of the said dimensions.
